I recently celebrated my 27th birthday last week. Yeah, I'm already 27 - nearing the end of the calendar days :(. My day started with lighting up candles at church, though I wasn't able to attend mass as I have work. I then left for work early to do grocery shopping for my planned birthday party the next day. When I arrived home, I rested for a while and then prepared myself for dinner with the family at AA's Barbecue and Grill, Bulacao Branch.
I didn't have enough funds for this dinner so I planned to use my newly approved Standard Chartered Credit card. However the branch don't accept credit cards, sigh. But that wouldn't change up my goody 'ol mood. I still sticked to my plans and ordered what's on my list. So what did I order? We had sizzling bangus, shrimp sinigang, calamares and grilled pork belly with 8 rice and a tropical cooler for our drink.
After 10 or 15 mins of waiting in the al-fresco dining area, our order finally arrived. First off was the shrimp sinigang(a Filipino soup or stew characterized by its sour flavor most often associated with tamarind), which is indeed delicious. The soup has just the right amount of sourness that you won't get forced in making those funny faces due to sourness. It was served in a big bowl good for 3-5 persons. This one's a must-try especially during cold weathers to give your body the warmth it deserves.
The grilled pork belly was a bit of a disappointment. The serving was very small although I can't judge it accordingly as I don't know the exact price for it. But the pork belly just fits in a small saucer, its that small. The taste is ok, nothing spectacular. I should've gotten the pork barbecue sticks instead of this.
The calamares(breaded fried squid) on the other hand was superb. It may not look that good, but don't ever judge the book by its cover. The calamares was not the crunchy type. It was very soft, and easy to bite. It was indeed fried to perfection and not oily. It was also not too salty, good as an appetizer. It has this sweet and sour sauce that compliments well with the calamares.
Lastly, the most expensive viand in our meal was the sizzling bangus. Despite its slightly hefty price, you get what you paid for. The bangus was huge, boneless and so flavorful. One of the best sizzling bangus in Cebu. The seasonings sipped in well with the bangus. This huge sizzling bangus could feed up to 3 persons. We were not able to finish this dish so we took it home.
As for the tropical cooler, we had the orange-mango juice. This isn't as refreshing and as good as I thought. It tasted like ordinary packed orange/mango powdered juice with watermelon and orange bits, hehehe. Nonetheless, I'd pick this over softdrinks.
For a group of 5, our bill totalled P955. I forgot to take note of the prices, those that I remembered where the sizzling bangus at P270(P250 if not sizzling) and rice at P10/cup. So will I god back to AA's BBQ? Definitely, yes. I find it on the average. Just enough on the pocket and good in terms of food quality.
